Keach’s Catechism 1

I am planning to begin posting these at least a few times a week, perhaps even daily as I am able. Benjamin Keach published his catechism back in 1693 as a way to help families teach kids and also new believers sound Christian doctrine. It is based on the 1689 London Baptist Confession which is itself based largely upon the Westminster Confession. Keach’s Catechism is rooted in historic Christian theology and it overlaps quite a bit with other Protestant catechisms of the era, especially Westminster.

Sound doctrine along with biblical literacy, church fellowship, the regular practice of prayer, and daily walking by the Spirit are absolutely critical for Christian flourishing. Yet for many who claim to follow Christ, one or more of these elements is either severely deficient or entirely lacking in their lives. I want to do my part to help change that! Discipleship is central to the Christian life. It is the process of being apprenticed in the way of Jesus. How can we claim be an apprentice of Jesus if we do not take seriously our job to learn what he has taught as well as to pattern our lives after him? Both aspects are critical and neither can be neglected if we are to become fully formed in Christ.

I would encourage anyone who is reading this to take stock of your own life. Have you fully committed yourself to following Jesus in every way? I’m asking this question myself on a regular basis. The one thing I know for sure is that I want my life to be marked primarily by one thing, and that is my discipleship to Christ. I want to know him, and to help others to know him. May the Lord make it so. Amen.
